Introduction / Getting Started

The purpose of this page is to act as a guide in helping you completely disassemble your AK rifle. It is complete with detailed step-by-step instructions along with photos and illustrations. All images are in thumbnail format, if you need to enlarge the picture, simply click on it.

Not all AK rifles are exactly the same, so some steps of the procedure may vary slightly depending on the origin of your rifle. For this guide, I've decided to use the Romanian WASR-10 as an example rifle. The WASR-10 is probably the most common AK rifle in America, so most visitors will be able to relate to this tutorial.

The first step in performing maintenance on ANY firearm is to make sure it is UNLOADED. Safety is paramount. There are hundreds if not thousands of injuries and deaths every year that occur while cleaning firearms. This is due to ignorance and negligence. Ensure your firearm is cleared before field stripping. The first thing you should do is remove the magazine.

After removing the magazine, move it to a spot away from the cleaning area. There is no need to have ammunition present while cleaning a firearm. If there are other people present near the cleaning area, locking up any ammunition wouldn't be a bad idea. Next, check the chamber.

Once the rifle has been cleared and all ammunition has been safely stored in another area, you are ready to begin disassembling your rifle.
